Benzonia - Churches

All roads reach up to Benzonia, a town that sits high atop a hill in Benzie County. This bountiful woodland was originally founded in 1858 as the site of a proposed Christian college. The eloquent historian, Bruce Catton, hails from this village and wrote much about its beginnings. The main building of his father's academy now houses the public library. Fine art galleries also round out the hill and look across to a popular eatery and other businesses. To the south and west, the lush Betsie River spirits along through forested terrain. The wide hilltop street is busy in the pleasant weather months, while the secret shops and energetic folks that thrive in the surrounding area grow perseverance and clarity of inner direction. From the aesthetically soothing bee-products shop, to the handmade footwear, to the active environmental institute, to the llama farm, all these and more manage to function independently and as a community to further an authentic quality of life originally established by the early settlers. The carefully restored and maintained elegant older homes add a dedication to the integrity of Benzonia. This lovely place often lingers as an essence of hope.
