The name of this northern Michigan county is derived from "aux bec scies" (a French term for the Betsie River) which was corrupted by American sailors and refined to "Benzie." Many of the villages are situated on the far-reaching waterways of the wide and beautiful Betsie and Platte rivers. The land consists of a wild, and yet, serene countryside, sleepy towns (most of the year), , and resourceful folks that help maintain that rare sense of community spirit. Large inland lakes, Crystal, Big and Little Platte, and Lake Ann are enjoyed with fishing, swimming, and recreational water sports.
