Benzie County - Governmental

The name of this northern Michigan county is derived from "aux bec scies" (a French term for the Betsie River) which was corrupted by American sailors and refined to "Benzie." Many of the villages are situated on the far-reaching waterways of the wide and beautiful Betsie and Platte rivers. The land consists of a wild, and yet, serene countryside, sleepy towns (most of the year), , and resourceful folks that help maintain that rare sense of community spirit. Large inland lakes, Crystal, Big and Little Platte, and Lake Ann are enjoyed with fishing, swimming, and recreational water sports. Homesteaders nestle in the piney woods and daily encounter deer, turkey, and other native critters. Rural road signs point the way to creative delights from sugarbush chocolates to exquisite stained glass. The coastline of Lake Michigan is the grand western boundary of the county -- here is the place to revive the soul by getting lost in the dune cliffs, remote beaches, and the sights of protected wildflowers and birds.
